Goodbye 2022!![]()
As we look forward to 2023, the Historical Society of Long Beach wants to thank all of our community partners, new friends, old friends, volunteers, donors, members, and Board for making our 60th year special.![]()
A Woman’s Place: The Exhibition will be shifting to make way for our upcoming collaborative exhibition with the Black Student Union Elders Association collection. Stop by in February to see both shows, free and open to the public during regular gallery hours.![]()
You can see some of the women featured in the A Woman’s Place on our website.![]()
The webinar series "Sharing the Origins of the Educational Opportunity Program" is archived on our YouTube channel.![]()
This year there were quite a few changes at the 26th Annual Historical Cemetery Tour, including the inaugural Costume Contest hosted by LB Living. New community partners joined returning favorites to create the largest Cemetery Tour yet. We can’t overemphasize our appreciation for all the community members, volunteers, and donors who came together to make it happen, AND for all of the attendees and participants. Without YOU, there is no Cemetery Tour.![]()
If you missed Community Sharing Day, there are always opportunities to donate or share your Long Beach treasures. You can call us at (562)424-2220 to set up an appointment or ask questions. Many people assume that their story isn’t special, but we suggest it is precisely these stories, photographs, blue prints, flyers, etc. that need to be preserved to tell the whole story of our diverse city. YOUR history is Long Beach history.![]()
With the lifting of restrictions and continued caution for health and safety, we were fortunate to meet and chat with many of you at the Getty 25 event at Houghton Park, the Long Beach International Tamales Fest, Rancho Walk, First Fridays in Bixby Knolls, Khmer, Come All!, and more. Thank you for all of the invitations and we can’t wait to see what 2023 brings.

Menus for Luncheon on the RMS Queen Mary, Ca. 1955![]()
People sometimes mail or bring us items such as these menus as they clear out old treasures, often with a note about how the person came to own the items. Although The Queen didn’t dock in Long Beach until December 1967 (official transfer on 11 Dec 1967), these stories help us add context for researchers and others looking to learn more through our archive.![]()
In the archive, we also have the ship manifest for the last voyage, Cunard Liner soap, stationary, cruise programs, brochures, and more. There are hundreds of items related to the Queen, including renderings for the original plans, a budget from 1968, and documents about her conversion to a hotel. ![]()
After all the controversies (perhaps because of the controversies!), the Queen Mary is an iconic part of Long Beach history.![]()
To schedule a research appointment, please visit our website www.hslb.org and click on the research request form. Research is free for members.![]()

We are helping Long Beach Airport to preserve its collections. Here is HSLB Archivist, Alan Scardera, helping to move LGB materials. m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid0N49ZBKLA7ogdALvUsVPtSchtn7eVdttMWPmi6cHK3Xm7pXqE6o6FbRE…A major renovation is underway for our Historic Terminal! While the gem of our airport gets some TLC, our historical artifacts are being temporarily relocated. Thanks to the Historical Society of Long Beach for helping us safeguard these pieces of aviation history, like Earl Daugherty’s aviator cap.
